One of the most popular and famous of all Christmas carols is set here for brass quintet and organ (or piano). The familiar melody soars with the sound of brass. Range and control of sound are the two factors that make this piece difficult. This is a truly awesome work to be performed in a church during the holiday season. -the publisher

21st Century (2010). "Passacaglia is a work for brass quintet that tackles a style of composition rarely explored in brass chamber music repertoire. An ostinato subject is provided initially by the trombone, creating a quasi-minimalist chant-like atmosphere, as other motifs gradually evolve and emerge before disappearing back into the homophonic texture. A central trumpet duet suggests a new direction, yet hints of the original theme never fully subside. Another duet provides even greater agitati...

20th Century. Spanish. Begins simply with moving eighth notes in the euphonium (trombone) with a steady motor rhythm of repeated sixteenth notes in the horn. Other players layer over top increasing in intensity with frequent "hairpin" dynamic changes. A slow, transparent, lyrical section follows and leads back to the faster opening material. Slow and fast sections continue to alternate until the piece concludes with quiet burst of repeated sixteenth notes and final chord. Scored for 1st trumpet...
20th Century. Spanish. This Malaguena is a Spanish dance written in a brisk 3/8. Middle section is a contrasting Adagio in 3/4 featuring 1st trumpet rubato solo. Serenata is an Allegretto in 3/4 built on a 16th note triplet/eighth note rhythm which is passed throughout the ensemble. Frequent dramatic ritardandos, dynamic and articulation details give plenty of opportunity for an expressive performance. Score & parts. -pc (score sample pages)
20th Century. Spanish. Straight mute required for all players except for tuba which is to be played "quasi muted." Preludio movement is marked "Andantino" in 3/4 and features long, lyrical melodic lines which are passed around the ensemble. Tango is intricately scored and provides great opportunity for dynamic and articulation detailing with soft technical playing. -pc
