With a background in rock and heavy metal, I figured it was time to write something in an art music setting using similar musical materials. The bass trombone is a great instrument for expressing aggression, and thus fits this style very well. However, there are many moments of lyrical and romantic playing which find their way into this piece. These "happier" elements eventually win out in the end, which is where the title comes from. "Bone to Pick" is essentially a musical narration of the path of an argument. - the composer

Besides perfect pitch and less back pressure in all registers, e-Brass IV achieves a very natural air flow like an open instrument. These leading features were created by carrying out a through investigation of the ideal acoustical design of something wecall the total "Instrument", comprising a horn, a mouthpiece, and finally the mute. This original design approach allows the e-Brass' to be a part of the instrument and also allows for the instrument to resonate naturally while competing practice/silent mutes just kill the sound. Further, as the instrument is still resonating with the mute, the headphones allow the listener a more pure sound without any unnecessary electronic controls.
One of the big differences between e-Brass and other general e-mutes is that the electronic circuit is set inside the mute. With this built-in structure, e-Brass has much less of a hassle in the preparation and only needs headphones to play. But, despitethis, e-Brass is made up to 40% lighter than other e-mutes. In fact, even e-Brass Horn weighs less than most smart phones, so you won't feel like the bell is being weighed down or worried about dropping the mute. With this incredible lightness, e-Brass enables enough stamina for focused practice or ease in any performance situation. - the manufacturer

Il due Foscari takes place in 15-th century Venice. The two Foscari are the city's Doge, Francesco, and his son, Jacopo, who has just returned from exile for a murder he did not commit. He has been brought back to Venice to stand trial for treason, a crime for which he is also innocent. Since Venice has come under the power of the corrupt I Dieci (The Council of Ten), neither the pleas of the powerful Doge nor his wife, Lucrezia, can save him. Jacopo is found guilty and dies on the ship as it leaves to take him to exile. His father is forced to step down as Doge and, realizing that his life is almost over, falls to the ground and dies.
Opening music from Giuseppe Capelli's Capriccio comes from the agitated string tutti of Act I, Scene 2, interspersed with cadenzas in the Eb clarinet. At measure 9, the Eb clarinet solo is a direct statement of Lucrezia's plea to God for comfort, Ah, si confronto ai miseri! Lucrezia's aria at bar 18, Tu pur lo sai, occurs in the Finale to Act I. Here she pleads with the Doge to do something to stop her beloved Jacopo from being condemned. His impassioned reply at bar 35, Oltre ogni umano cedere, begs her to console him in his misery for there is nothing he can do. Their duet from bar 50 concludes the andante section with Lucrezia's role played by the E-flat clarinet and the piano contributing the voice of the Doge. Closing music to Cappelli's Capriccio is a large choral number taken from Act III, Scene 1 where the piano is the voice of Jacopo as he bids farewell to his wife and father. The work concludes with original music by Cappelli. -the publisher

• Diameter: 26.6 mm
• Cup Diameter: 18 mm • Rim Width: 4.3mm • Bore Size: 4.7 mm • Back Bore: V typeThe (1890) Hawkes-type thin cup-wall, nearest to the rim, combined with the extra mass below the cup that has proved so successful, giving such ease in soft playing with a really beautiful just-heard overtone structure to the sound, should work effectively with the deep, mainly conical mouthpieces that are always used with the french horn.
Our engineer also happens to be a horn-player and was as intrigued as I was with the idea.
We varied the length of the exterior parallel section, keeping the internal dimensions exactly the same. The results of the five different shapes were unbelievable. There was more difference between them than I could ever have imagined possible. Without very much difficulty, we chose the best version. As with other Heritage models, soft playing and high notes - the most demanding areas of horn-playing, were magically much easier.
Tim Jones, LSO first horn, tried our sample. His first reaction on seeing it was surprise. "You'll never get a horn-player to play THAT!" I agreed that it looked different, but persuaded him to try it. "My God! What have you done?" He was hooked!
When such a great player - one of the world's finest - reacts in such a way, it is clear that we have something rather special. Tim is also a musician-businessman and a director of PAXMAN, the famous and most innovative french horn company, based in London.
So we talked. Tim and I had worked together in the LSO, many years ago and had a good mutual respect. The result was that we agreed to market the new models jointly; having the endorsement of Paxman would give some creibility to the unusual outer shape.
Having established the basic design and realised how successful it could be, we had then to decide how the range might be planned. Our horn mouthpieces have always been well-received, so we decided to use our 5N, 6N and 7N, and the Paxman 3B and 4B as the basis for the internal dimensions, whilst also using some traditional cups for the smallest sizes, giving us a total of 7 models.

Do shooting stars have something in common with musical ideas? To Friedrich Grossnick this is obvious: both are spontaneous, always surprising - and sometimes unforgettable, we'd like to add. Especially when the music is as "catchy" as in this piano composer's new music book. To be heard in the 19 easy-to-moderately difficult pieces are the most varied popular musical styles - just as in the first volume "Catchy Tunes." However, while a hurtling celestial body is burning out somewhere in the universe, the easy-to-remember melodies can be brought back over and over, happily enough, for learning through play and for the pleasure of playing piano! -the publisher

The idea for these duets came from programming a duet recital with my colleague and dear friend, Dr. Joanna Hersey, Associate Professor of Low Brass at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She had several new arrangements for us to perform, and she had set them specifically to be rehearsed and performed by her students. She suggested I write something jazzy for us to play that her students could also work on in lessons. What started out as a quick dose of pseudo-dixieland turned into something quite different.
"Tango" is built on a straight-eighth-note groove. It's meant to be danceable without being too fast or too loud. Players should have fun with the style while being very strict about time and rhythm. "Bolero" challenges players to provide a steady, rhythmic bass line in the often unwieldy lower registers of the horn, and long, lyrical melodies in the upper register. "Jam" is all about having fun. It is built around basic harmonic and rhythmic patterns, and is meant to be played aggressively. My hope is that players build necessary skills while preparing these duets, and get a hefty round of applause for their efforts at the performance.
Thanks go to Walter Sear (1930-2010), whose books of tuba duets form a cornerstone of low brass chamber repertoire. Thanks also to my colleagues in "The President's Own", Chris Tiedeman and Paul Mergen, who often reminded me of how much fun duets can be every time they pulled out their well-loved, dog-eared copy of the Sear book. This work is dedicated to Dr. Joanna Hersey and her studio at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for their inspiration, dedication, and spirit. My sincere thanks to all of you for making this project a reality. -the publisher

Each lesson has a full practice routine to develop the fundamentals needed to become an outstanding player. But in addition to the practice routine, each lesson also contains several pieces of musical literature to help the student develop musically, andto keep interest at a high level.
The songs in this book are in the styles of Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Ballad. You will notice that throughout the book, simple, beautiful melodies are interspersed. In my opinion, it is many times harder to play a melody with good intonation, proper phrasing, and all the rest that goes into making beautiful music, than to play something that is purely technical.
This books is specifically geared toward the trombone teacher looking to spark renewed interest in young students.

Educator David Newell, author of the critically-acclaimed texts, Classroom Management in the Music Room and Teaching Rhythm, shares time-tested strategies and personal reflections that reveal how music teachers can help students make beautiful music during every rehearsal_not just during special events like those listed above.
To retain students in music, they need to get hooked on music. More than anything else, it is the daily classroom experience that keeps them in the music program! Every rehearsal minute must be carefully harvested with intention and purpose. After reading David's book, The Rehearsal: A Quick Guide to One Music Teacher's Most Potent Retention Tool, you'll know why a beautifully-crafted, aesthetically-driven, well-planned and fast-paced rehearsal is the key to keeping students in performance ensembles. -the publisher

In this book I will show that there are, in fact, a lot of other possibilities. This volume contains many folk songs whose melodies are well suited for the purpose of the book (and I also want our folk songs so as not to be forgotten, but brought on to new generations!).
With this book I want to show you with the F attachment you can: • Vary your choice of position moreso that on a trombone without a trigger.
• Play the "missing" notes between low E and pedal Bb, and have more options when playing pedal tones. • Improve your breathing, since the trigger register requires more air. • Improve your playing in the upper register, as good low register work requires more thorough work in centering the tone. • Use the trigger and low registers to "warm down" after a hard day's practice. Many of the world's leading trombonists recommend practicing in the low register, and personally speaking, for me it has paid off. I have also used many songs and exercises in the bass trombone register with my students with good results. The pleaseure of playing good music is something we all appreciate. In this book you will therefore find melodious folk tunes that gradually descend into the deepest register.
I hope you will enjoy the "journey" downwards into the bass trombone register, and that you will appreciate learning some Norwegian folk tunes at the same time. -the author

Jazztets are not meant to be a continuation or modification or improvement of Fripperies. They are intended to help hornists step further through the door that has already been opened to us. Jazztets are written in a harmonic, melodic and rhythmic language in tune with the jazz music of today. Many of them are written on chord changes of existing modern jazz standards. They will hopefully enthuse, educate and broaden horizons, as well as provide more possibilities for chamber music concerts, recitals or informal quartet sessions. The hope is that they will be musically satisfying, a bit challenging, but most of all, enjoyable to play. Score & parts. -the publisher

The Storyteller comes from an article written about Bud – an article I recall reading while a teenager. It described how Bud didn’t just play the trumpet, he told a story with every note he played. I endeavored, through the course of this piece, to tell the story of Bud the best I could. There are subtle references to many of the famous orchestral trumpet excerpts that I listened to him play the most. Of course, the aforementioned tear-jerker is saved for the end, with a solo offstage trumpet hearkening – as if Bud himself – one last time. -Jim Stephenson

How do you know if you're playing in tune? Is it by looking at a tuner, by comparison to other members of your ensemble, or something else entirely? Trombone Intonation Mastery offers even seasoned musicians new ways to think about intonation, focusing on specific trombone techniques so you can genuinely learn how to listen carefully and adjust precisely. It will help you cultivate trust in this basic skill so you can confidently play in tune regardless of the playing situation you face. Trombone Intonation Mastery is an interactive tutorial that will help you improve your intonation through playing etudes, fundamentals, and duets.
Recalibrate your perception of intonation, and increase the accuracy of your intonation with Trombone Intonation Mastery!
"David Vining has filled a big gap in the pedagogical literature with Trombone Intonation Mastery. It thoroughly defines the issues and presents intuitive, well-thought-out remedies that lay out a path to positive results. Useful for advanced high schooland college students (and professional players, for that matter), this book's unique approach is to incorporate specific attention to intonation into a volume that includes exercises, routines, etudes, and duets. This book contains enough material to keep a trombonist busy for a long time. Trombone Intonation Mastery offers a concrete way forward." - Timothy Myers, Principal Trombone, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
"I am very pleased to recommend Trombone Intonation Mastery by David Vining. I have been searching for new material to use in my own practice and teaching, and this volume approaches trombone-specific tuning issues in an organized, systematic way that will aid players of all ability levels. Through the use of various tools (tuner, drones, and duets), trombonists have the means to discover their own tendencies and correct bad habits. The position specific etudes and routines are the perfect material tohelp you settle into correct fundamental slide placement, and the exercises that cover the harmonic series and intervals over drones will have you listening and adjusting like true intonation masters. The duets, particularly those that directly referencefamiliar solos and orchestral excerpts, provide the necessary real-life application of these critical skills. I look forward to incorporating Trombone Intonation Mastery into my studio!" - Dr. Dan Cherry, Assistant Professor of Trombone, West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Trombonist, Balaton Chamber Brass
"In this book, David Vining provides a new approach to developing a broader understanding of intonation for the trombonist. The exercises go beyond the perfunctory practice of isolating notes with the tuner or drone, and give the reader a better foundation for real life execution of proper intonation. It's like intonation on steroids!" - Michael Becker, Principal Trombone, Tucson Symphony Orchestra

Designed as an homage to the vintage Conn 88H, the classic sound and feel of early Elkhart models was combined with modern day features and design to create an example of balance and beauty. The 88HNV rejuvenates the classic vintage era trombone startingwith the traditional rose brass bell, which is modeled after the bell weights from prime early examples. The unique valve wrap provides the balance and feel of traditional vintage models, but utilizes a modern approach to the open wrap design. This helpsto create an even balance throughout the entire range. Other features include an updated valve lever and rosewood thumb paddle, creating a more ergonomic feel. The stunning new engraving weaves through four eras of Conn history. The chrome plated nickel silver handslide tubes in combination with the standard rose brass outer material provide a warm resonant sound and smooth action. Coupled with a modern style lightweight case, the New Vintage. Features:
• 0.547" large symphonic bore
• 8.5" rose brass bell • Vintage style lightweight bell thickness • Newly designed open wrap F attachment • 0.562" bore F attachment • Rose brass outer slide tubes • Chrome-plated inner slide tubes • Nickel handgrips & braces • Tapered rotor & bearings • Ergonomic rosewood lever paddle • New one-piece valve lever • Mechanical stainless ball linkage • Beautiful engraving highlights 4 eras of Conn history • Conn 5G mouthpiece • Lightweight slim style case • Made in the United States at Elkhart, IN

This method book aims at all levels of students, from beginners to pros. The author presents traditional pandeiro rhythms, rhythms that were originally not played on the pandeiro but have especially been adapted to this instrument, modern rhythms, odd rhythms as well as short compositions for pandeiro, triangle, agogo and tamborim. Due to the fact that the human voice and the pandeiro are closely coupled with each other in Brazilian music, an entire chapter of this book has especially been dedicated to the combined use of pandeiro and vocals - something that will prove to be very helpful and important for the development of each percussionist's coordination and independence.

The Bullet Brace is a descendant from the Edwards Stegeman bar, an "L" shaped brace soldered onto the receiver of the valve section, which came into being from the requests of many players who wanted left arm relief from holding their instruments. The Bullet Brace helps redistribute the weight of the horn to the bigger lower muscles of the left arm. By redistributing the weight it takes the tension off the smaller upper muscles in the wrist region. Many people get an imprint in the fleshy part of their left hand from the weight of their horn. The Bullet Brace eliminates these pressures and relieves discomfort that can occur from holding the instrument over long periods of time.
Unlike the Stegeman bar, the Bullet Brace does not require heat or the use of a gas torch to install, so there is no chance of weakening the structure of the horn during installation. Additionally, a technician is not required for the installation, and the position can be easily adjusted afterwards. The Bullet Brace is machined out of solid aluminum, and is installed on the bell brace. These features help maintain the sound qualities of your instrument without dampening the its natural vibrations.
Wanting to make this bar something that every trombonist could attach to their trombone without the use of a torch was one of the goals Edwards set when they designed the Bullet Brace. To make something that would fit every player regardless of their hand size and eliminate the most stress while improving the players comfort was a large challenge to say the least. It took a few prototypes but the final design was a two-piece design that allows the player to mount the Bullet to the lower bell brace near the bell. The Bullet is mounted with the same allen wrench that works on the axial flow valve.
The Bullet Brace can be adjusted left or right, up or down on the bell stay to wherever the individual should desire. A black delrin rod is installed on the bar and can be left alone or a black piece of round foam (included) can be fitted for greater comfort. -the manufacturer/cdp

The S Brace fits most manufacturers' trombones (Edwards, Getzen, and most Shires use the C Brace, item 99626). In some cases, minor modifications may be needed (including bending and/or shortening of the bar). The S Brace is built long to accommodate any such modification. The bullet portion is cut to fit the slightly larger (diameter) bell brace tube used on these models.
The Bullet Brace can be adjusted left or right, up or down on the bell stay to wherever the individual should desire. A black delrin rod is installed on the bar and can be left alone or a black piece of round foam (included) can be fitted for greater comfort. -the manufacturer/cdp
At the time of its introduction, the T396-A tenor became an industry leader for design innovation and performance. Revolutionary approaches to bracing systems, materials, and manufacturing techniques resulted in a trombone unlike anything else on the market. That forward-thinking approach and constant drive for advancement has led to the new, reimagined T396-AR tenor trombone.
As the latest evolution of the T396, the T396-AR is the result of years of in house development and on stage, performance-driven testing. Every millimeter of the instrument was evaluated to achieve matchless performance. From the end crook to tuning slide, bell flare to rotor body, no element of the original design was considered sacred. The end result is a trombone design built on the foundation laid by the T396-A of the past, optimized for the next generation of great trombonists.
New design enhancements include:
1. AR-1 Artist Rotor
We did our homework when developing the new, Edwards exclusive, AR-1 Artist Rotor. Seeking a balance between a responsive, free-blowing feel and wonderful, large bore tenor sound we tested countless rotor configurations and designs on the market. It wasn't long until we realized what we wanted for the new T396 did not yet exist. The only option left was to develop our own rotor design. One that outperforms every other "conventional" rotor available in every way. All while feeling as if there is no rotor there at all.2. Historically Crafted Tuning Slide Bow
"They don't make them like they used to" is a cliché we are all familiar with. Sometimes the new way is to speed production and cut costs. And sometimes it is out of necessity because of generational knowledge loss. Over time, the new way becomes standard and accepted as just the way it is done. This is the case with many modern-day brass instruments_ especially the tubing. In the past, every non-machined part of an instrument was formed out of sheet stock. A labor-intensive, time-consuming, and costly technique requiring a higher skill level than many possessed. Today, the industry standard is to form all tubing from a larger, thicker raw stock tubing. Why? It's quicker, cheaper, and requires much less training to do well. While it is consistent, the question we wanted answered was "Is it better?". We set out to test this by making a tuning slide crook that was hand formed and shaped entirely out of sheet stock. The learning curve was steep with a lot of variables to iron out, but theend result is a tuning slide that is more responsive, colorful, and tonally complex.3. Scalloped Harmonic Bridge
Perhaps the single most important design element of the original T396 was the introduction of the patented (US Pat No 8,247,675) Harmonic Pillar System. For the first time, musicians were presented with a fixed instrument that could be "acoustically tuned" to meet their specific playing style, setting, and needs. Pivotal to this system was the Edwards exclusive Harmonic Bridge brace. Much more than just a place to put the Harmonic Pillars, the Harmonic Bridge is critical to the entire bell section bracing system. The new, scalloped version has been strategically lightened to reduce the central bell section weight, thus dramatically improving energy transference within the trombone.4. ???
Sometimes in life, we all need a little mystery. Among the advancements to the T396 design are a few proprietary improvements we've decided to keep to ourselves. And while we aren't going to spotlight them, you will undoubtedly pick up on just that little something extra when you try the T396-AR for yourself. They make up that last 1% of greatness that can't be explained on a spec sheet. That little sprinkle of something special that can't be measured or quantified or, most importantly, copied. It's our secret sauce or secret formula kept under lock and key. You can't really blame us, everybody likes to have a secret or two.

These settings of the Galliard bassoon sonatas grew out of a perceived need for more intermediate-early advanced solo literature for the bass trombone, as well as more settings of Baroque-period works for that instrument. While the sonatas are playable on the bass trombone in their original keys (whether at pitch or down one octave), by setting them in lower keys I have endeavored to make them useful for developing tone quality and technique in the valve register, while not going so low that clarity and facility might be compromised (as can be the case when playing in the original keys down one octave). The new keys I have chosen for each of the sonatas are closely related to the original ones, in every case down a perfect fourth or perfect fifth, so something of the "sound" of the original keys is maintained. Other than the key changes I have made very few adjustments to the intervals in the solo or left hand keyboard parts; in the places where I have done the most editing I have provided cues for the original intervals and/or rhythms so that the player can choose whether to perform the simplified part I have provided or something closer to the original.
The new keys (as well as copyright considerations) necessitated that I provide entirely new figured bass realizations for the accompanist's right hand. These are entirely my own, though in the early stages of this project I did consult with Professor Stacy Rodgers, my colleague and collaborator at the University of Mississippi. I have provided more than a simple harmonic accompaniment in my realization; each movement has a number of short melodic passages to provide interest in the keyboard part for both performer and listener. Still, I have been purposefully reserved in writing these parts, and in no case should the keyboardist feel obligated to strictly adhere to the part as I have written it. I have left the figured bass in the score so that the performer can modify and/or build upon what I have provided, particularly in the repeats (as Professor Rodgers did when playing and recording one of the sonatas with me). I have labeled the accompaniment part simply as "keyboard" with the understanding that these sonatas were originally intended for performance with harpsichord (assisted by cello or bassoon) or organ, though I am sure that the vast majority of performances of these arrangements will have piano as the accompanying instrument. My "keyboard" part has thus been written with that instrument in mind. If performing with harpsichord assisted by cello or bassoon those players will need to make adjustments in places where the bass lines extend below the ranges of their instruments.
While I am confident that my right hand part is a faithful realization of the harmonic structure indicated by the composer, no attempt has been made either in my keyboard realization or in my light editing of the solo part to adhere to present scholarly conventions regarding the interpretation of "early music" I have constructed these arrangements to meet the needs of twenty-first-century student (and professional) bass trombonists, and thus I have provided the interpretive markings which I believe willyield the most pleasing performances on that instrument. That said, I have sought to be modest in my indications of tempo, dynamics, articulation, and ornamentation, as these sonatas will admit varying interpretations in those respects. Performers and teachers are welcome and encouraged to experiment in order to find the interpretations which they think most effective.
Although I originally created these arrangements with the bass trombone in mind, I am sure that they will work equally well on tuba. Due to range considerations similar to those I mentioned above for the bass trombone, they might be particularly better-suited to performance on the F or E-flat tubas than previous editions of these sonatas. I am looking forward to using these arrangements with my students on both instruments, and hope that others will find them useful, as well. -the publisher

The outside shape, though somewhat similar in appearance to the Signature line, has also been reworked to allow for better weight distribution. -the manufacturer/cdp

The typical aura which attaches to the guitar as folk and art instrument encompasses the primitive as well as the highly sensitive, intimate and collective - it also includes motives which may be exactly described in historic, geographic and sociologicalterms. I started from the characteristic playing style of the guitar, simplifying it in technical fingering, but also re-forming and developing it, often beyond the limits imposed by practice centring on that aura. I constantly had the feeling that this music was "accompanying" something - if not a text, then individual words or thoughts. This is reflected by the incorporation of spoken words or thoughts, derived from "Illusion and Reality" by the English Marxist poet and author Christopher Caudwell whodied in Spain nearly 40 years ago at the age of 30 among those attempting to halt the Franco regime. Caudwell demanded an art which realistically confronts reality and its multi-layered contradictions. To him and to all outsiders who, because they disturb thoughtlessness, are instantly lumped together with iconoclasts, this piece is dedicated. - the composer

The winner of the 2017 Pershing's Own U.S. Army Band Composition Competition, Sonata for Tuba "Hades God of the Underworld" was inspired by a friend's request to "write something low" for tuba. Instead of utilizing the lower tessitura of the instrument as one would expect, I warped this idea of lowness by using Hades the Greek God of the underworld as the basis for this programmatic work, with the idea that this underworld is the lowest imaginable realm. A stylistic change and a new aspect of Hades characterizes each movement. The first movement "Hades Rising" depicts the Greek God emerging from the underworld to wreak havoc. The second movement "The Unseen One" is one of a few translations of "Hades" and contains a simple, yet beautiful melody in the solo line. The third movement "Dance of the Dead" is creates a twisted, ominous atmosphere heavily inspired by Franz Schubert's Erlk”nig. The final movement "Wrath of Hades" displays the catastrophic capabilities of the God by showcasing both the soloist and pianist in an aggressive finale. -the publisher

Yellow After The Rain (1971) was written by the late, great Mitchell Peters (1935 -2017), a musician who achieved renown for his time with the Los Angeles Philharmonic andeminence for his illustrious composing career. It's an understatement to say that its reputationprecedes itself: Yellow After The Rain remains noteworthy amongst marimbists as both anintroduction to the four-mallet-technique and as a frequently performed audition piece.50 years after the debut of Yellow After The Rain comes Kyle Scully's Yellow After TheAcid Rain (2021). Arranged as a parody, Yellow After The Acid Rain augments andembellishes the original's melodic structure in an attempt to both honor and satirize thenotability of its predecessor, while turning it into something much more chaotic andchallenging.Requiring a 5 octave marimba as opposed to the original's 4, and with addedimplements including a concert bass drum and suspended cymbal, Yellow After The Acid Rainfrequently sounds like the purposeful antithesis to Yellow After The Rain, although it retainsthe signature virtuosic movement that requires the entire breadth of the marimba. -the publisher

The lightweight nickel-silver handslide construction offers clean, precise articulations. The custom 7.75-inch, yellow-brass bell retains a clear, pure sound with strong fundamental, and keeps a very consistent tone color and overtone structure throughout the range of dynamics. This is combined with the ease of playing and projection for which S.E. Shires instruments are famed. Responsive and nimble, the Michael Davis + model trombone is at home in any jazz or commercial setting. - the manufacturer

He initiated the idea that the piece should pay homage to one of the long-time greats in the trumpet world, Timofei Dokshizer, who had recently passed. Growing up as a trumpeter myself, Dokshizer had a great impact on my musical development, and, in factI was given several of his albums by one of my first trumpet teachers, Peter Labella, who had died several years before, and much too young.
The piece, then, is a tribute on many levels. First to my friend, Paul, who is a constant source of inspiration and character. It is, of course, dedicated to Mr. Dokshizer, whose impact on the trumpet and music world, and my early love of the trumpet, isimmeasurable. It also is written with remembrance to Mr. Labella, who had the insight to recognize my love of music, and gave me his depth of knowledge that has stayed with me to this day.
When Paul first mentioned the idea of writing the tribute piece, I was immediately struck with ideas on how to construct the piece. I wanted to write a piece that would be reminiscent of the old recordings: the concert waltzes, scherzos and dances that he played so touchingly and delicately, yet with his inimitable Russian flair. I wanted to step back, and not try to produce sounds no one has ever heard before, but yet to create something that sounded as if it has always been there; something where theaudience could just sit back, relax, enjoy, and give thanks to the legacy of the great musical mastery of Timofei Dokshizer. -James Stephenson June, 2005

"In what would at first seem an impossible task, Ed Hoffman has made a brilliant synopsis of the piece that is playable by two trumpets. Of course, some things are missing but you will surprised at how well this duet calls up the music in all its mysteryand feral energy. And you are free to add to it and make a small ad hoc ensemble to intensify your recital experience." For advanced performers. -the publisher
As a work for Solo Trombone the composer wanted to explore the dramatic and lyrical qualities of the instrument performing both the usual (?) fanfare music with which it is associated and the long soaring lyrical lines of which it is supremely capable. He also wanted to explore the complete register of this remarkable instrument and, in a limited way, some of the special effects it is capable of.
Although the four movements can be played separately, or in any order or indeed in the printed order, there is a 'through line' of thought from Fanfare & Toccata I to Lied, Dreamscape and the final Toccata & Fanfare II (La Chasse). One idea which Chris has explored in his public performances is to space the four movements through a programme and perhaps move around the platform area in the process. Peter Swan fully approves of this imaginative approach to programming.

The title of this work, K-1, relates to the Japanese martial art of that name. Even though I am not a fan of this kind of sports, when Steve Rosse asked me to write something for 6 trombones and 2 tubas, (knowing what a strong player he is), something extremely wild, cruel and raw sounded spontaneously in my mind. I imagined two tubas (fighters) playing short notes as they punch each other, with some of the notes being picked up from the bass trombones (the allegorical coaches and trainers) because they are following the trainer's screaming instructions at them in the ring! The four tenor trombones (the allegorical audience) can have a really different musical texture; sometimes just making noise, but sometimes shouting together if the fight is exciting. This situation offers a chance for a kind of theatrical act on stage! Fighters marching in, face to face, starting and ending each round with a gong hit and ending up by "throwing in the towel." This music is not beautiful, but it does have energy and excitement...just as does the sport called K-1. Score & parts. -the composer
