Romantic. The beautiful 'seduction' aria from "Samson et Dalila" by French composer Camille Saint-Saens is wonderfully realized with the flugelhorn performing the role of the sultry seductress. The trombone is also featured, playing the part of Samson inthe last chorus. Any group wishing to do justice to this arrangement is strongly encouraged to listed to a few recordings of singers performing it first. Marilyn Horne and Elina Garanca are good places to start. Romantic. As with the original setting, the Romanze (Opus 36) features the horn in Leach's beautiful arrangement for brass quintet. Her version calls for a pair of flugelhorns, but trumpets can be substituted, either using bucket mutes or playing into the stand. This short, song-like ensemble piece could serve as a welcome respite during the program. -the publisher

20th Century. Leonard Salzedo. The second of three brass works written by Leonard Salzedo for the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. It is in one continuous movement which falls into three main sections. The first, marked Allegro assai moderato is highly rhythmic in motifs. The second section, Andante, begins with a passage for solo tuba. The mood is very quiet and contemplative at first, but gradually becomes more animated and, after a slightly quicker passage, returns to its opening tranquillity. It...

20th Century (1999). Having composed two quintets previously for the American Brass Quintet, Morning Music and Distant Voices, I began the third with a desire to expand upon what I had already written, yet refer to the other two. As a result, I chose to begin the first movement with the trumpeters playing flugelhorns as I did in my first quintet Morning Music. While this darker texture was a nod to the earlier quintet, Strata begins with slowly shifting harmonies and no themes or counterpoint, in...
Early 20th Century. Satie wrote the twenty movement Sports et Divertissement Suite in 1914, just before the outbreak of WWI. Originally written for piano, it is a humoristic and sardonic fusion of illustrations, music, prose poetry and calligraphy, the latter three provided by Satie. This 9-movement arrangement of the Suite by Charles Decker for standard brass quintet is 6 minutes in length and includes the original narration by Satie (translated into English). -the publisher
