Narrative: This Conn 4H is a classic small bore tenor trombone dating from 1925, serial number 227***. Model number is stamped on both the slide and the bell. There is also a six-pointed star stamped on the slide above the slide's 4H stamping. This is a silver plated instrument in the classic style of the period where the bell flare is matte plated with a bright silver plated emblem, the remainder of the horn is bright silver plated, and inside of the bell has a gold wash treatment. The silveris in good shape overall with only a few spots worn away on the handgrip frmo long term use. The gold wash was lightly done, and is mostly intact. Like all horns of this period there is no slide-to-bell connection nut—it is a friction fit. There ishowever a slide lock, a feature of the 4H but was less common on instruments of this time. There is no counterbalance as was standard on later versions of this horn. The horn is in pretty good condition all things considered. The slide is straight and quite smooth. The case is in decent enough shape for being 100 years old and doesn't have an odor. This is a horn that can either be hung up as a display item, or could still be played in a band, which is somewhat rare for horns of this age. Part of the Sam Burtis collection. No mouthpiece. -cdp
