    Condition: Excellent

    • Lacquer: Lacquer is perfect. It has recently been relacquered.
    • Dents & Dings: There are none.
    • Slide: Grade A- action. The handslide is decently smooth and moderately fast when bone dry. It is remarkabley good for a horn of this vintage and is equal to modern builds. The inner slides show no loss of plating.
    • Tuning Slide: Works well. No dents. Perfect.
    • Case: This horn comes with the original equipment woodshell case. It's in very good condition inside and shows slight wear outside. Everything works and all leather components are still in place and operable. There is only a very slight odor of an older instrument but no smell of mildew.
Narrative:This is a rare H & A Selmer US trombone dating from the late 1930's to mid-1940's. We do not have an actual build year, but based on several factors (modern style bell lock screw, no slide lock, Earl Williams slide, case design), we feelit was made either right before the Second World War or just after. It is based on the more common Selmer Signet model, with its large "S" counterweight, but it is not a Signet. The term Signet does not appear anywhere on the horn or case. This instrument features a special Earl Williams designed and built curved-brace brass handslide assembly mated to a Selmer bell section. Williams made slides for Selmer from 1939-1945 before making his own horns under his own name. It is unclear whether he made slides or if any trombones were produced during the US war years 1942-1945. Apparently only a very few were built for Selmer USA this way, maybe fewer than a hundred. This horn is officially known as the Selmer "Triple Threat" model due to its "Dazzling Tone, Slide Speed, Comfortable Playing" (see the linked image). The term Triple Threat nor any coded reference to it appears on the horn or case. The hand brace features a patented ergonomic forward facing curve (US Patent number 1782452 - lookit up). We see braces like this on certain modern horns, but this was rare back then. It does make the horn easier and more comfortable to hold. As to the other claims - those are of course somewhat subjective. This particular sample was obtained in nearperfect condition except for ageing lacquer. We carefully refurbished it and had it relaquered with no deleterious effect to the engraving or finish. It looks and plays as though it were practically brand new.
