Concertino in Bb, op 12 (Kempton) [bass clef]

Romantic. Trombone transcription of the Concertino in B-Flat for Bassoon, opus 12. Long known in the bassoon and viola communities, this work is now available in an edition adapted to trombone. Changes consist mainly of a few octave displacements and alterations of trills and grace figures. Stylistically, this opus 12 Bassoon Concertino is very similar to the earlier opus 4 for trombone. For trombonists familiar with opus 4, there will be no mistaking the composer, as some classic figures are present here, such as the intermingling of triplets and dotted eighth-sixteenths. David's lyric writing is also unmistakable. The overall tenor of the work is reminiscent of classic orchestral overtures by Von Suppe, Offenbach and other contemporaries. As a work originally for bassoon (and then viola), the technical demands can be challenging at times on a slide trombone, with long continuous runs of up-tempo cut-time eighths. As a euphonium work, the technique required is well within that of an early advanced player with good breath control. It should be noted that the title "Concertino No 2" is one given by the publisher and is not original. -cdp
