Wilby, Philip Concerto

Euphonium Solos w/Piano

  • Wilby, Philip

    Concerto [treble or bass clef]

20th Century (1995). This extensive work was completed in 1995 and was written for Robert Childs. The first movement of part one opens with a sonata structure which alternates between a melodic style and rapid passage work. The tranquil conclusion of movement one is contrasted by the rapid pace of movement two which is inspired by the Zeibekiko, the traditional dance of the Greek Islands involving smashing plates and lifting tables in one's teeth! Part two opens with an exploratory section which re-examines some of the opening material surrounded by cadenzas, and centered upon a short and sustained adagio. The final movement marked allegro vivace opens with a rapid fugal section, which moves towards a climactic return of the music and tonality of the opening bars of the work. PW Extensive technical fingering passages. Treble range from Bb one octave below the staff to high E above the staff. Bass clef range from Ab below the staff to D an octave above the staff (5th ledger line).
