Dello Joio, Norman Sonata

Trumpet Solos w/Piano

  • Dello Joio, Norman

    Sonata

20th Century. American composer. Commissioned by the International Trumpet Guild. Movements entitled: Theme and Variations; Andante, liberamente; Allegro Spumante. The theme of the first movement is based on Agnus Dei which is notated below the first 5 notes of the trumpet part. Variation one is a syncopated scherzo. Next is a flowing/expressive lento. Final variation is marked Andante moderato with varied rhythmic and metrical elements that create a free-sounding solo line that is intricately intertwined with the piano part. Second movement feels initially like a cadenza over sustained arpeggios in the piano, and requires strong endurance as the lyrical solo lines continue with very few breaks. The repeated sixteenth notes of the final movement are creatively tossed back and forth from the trumpet to the piano. If you are looking for a sophisticated, distinctive, and lesser-known sonata for trumpet, this work may be the perfect choice. -pc
