    Fanfare Sonata [trumpet in C]

Late 20th Century (1981). Dedicated to William Schuman. Intended as a concert piece, this work is cast in three linked movements where much of the material is engendered by fanfare-like ideas. In the opening Moderato, there is an incantational first theme and an angularly lyric, rather wistful, second theme, both of which are freely developed before the movement ends with further variation of the first theme. Although the slow movement has new material, this movement is a kind of development sectionwhere the lyric theme of the moderato can be clearly heard. The finale is meant to be sprightly and propulsive. The high-spirited first theme generates a cantando melody that becomes a jolly saltarello. Fanfare-Sonata ends with a radical shift of mood: aharsh, declamatory coda that drives the work to a sonorous conclusion. - the composer

Moderate range (B below the staff to B above), but containing dynamic large leaps between the registers. Sudden technical shifts using double/ triple tonguing, quick fingering challenges, varied rhythmic shifts and metrical changes. Straight, harmon and cup mutes required. -pc
