For trumpet or other treble clef brass instruments.

Good jazz technique depends not only on jazz harmonies or stylistic creative principles, but also on thorough classical instrumental training. Seen in this light, the following studies, if played with symphonic rhythmic precision to improve embouchure, finger agility and range, will (even though they are played with no evidence of jazz style) make a valuable contribution to a player's maturity. Includes standard scales (blues scales, pentatonic scales), note sequences, and chord sequences. Also creates building blocks of jazz improvisation with constantly recurring patterns, fingering sequences and rhythmical figures which form the basis for impromptu playing. This will create freedom in expressive solo playing. - the composer

25 etudes which incorporate a wide variety of techniques such as finger dexterity, advanced flexibility, grace notes, trills/shakes, upper register playing up to high E (optional F) above the staff, double tonguing using the "da ga" syllables, variety of symmetrical and asymmetrical meters, changing meters, and a variety of syncopated rhythmic figures. Etudes 18-25 are partially composed, with the idea the performer will improvise and "find a continuation" of the written segment. 29 pages. -pc
