    Beyond Boundaries, w/Audio

Subtitled "How to acquire the special techniques of two of the foremost players of our time." Includes chapters on tone quality, practicing, articulations, time, range, intervals, ornaments, equipment, performance considerations and more. This is a book that covers many bases, does so thoughtfully, and is not merely a bunch of scales and run-of-the-mill technical etudes. There is a good deal of text that accompanies the etudes, giving further insight into their purpose. See the sample page below for onesuch example. The chapter titles give a good outline of the book, but alone they don't fully describe the nature of the volume. Perhaps the best way to explain this book is to paraphrase Raph's introduction:

"Listening to good players by any means is essential to the learning process. If you hear something played, you can always learn to do it yourself. This book will give you the means to extend your techniques and guide you in the learning process.
Beyond Bounderies examines trombone techniques from various perspectives. The exercises within, once learned, should then be expanded. The etudes are comprehensive. Each represents a particular technique. Learn them and use them. Reviewing them will recall (or revive) a forgotten technique."
