Musings - An Ode to the Greek Muses (2003)

21st Century (2003). First performance by Chicago Symphony hornist Gail Williams and Mary Ann Covert (piano) in Chicago, April, 2003.

The ancient Greek Muses have long been credited with inspiring artists to create great works, with each Music reigning over a certain domain. (The word "music" itself means "of the Muses.") Having a vested interest, the Muses visited me on a regular basis while I wrote these tributes, and they are largely responsible for how the pieces evolved-explaining, perhaps, the wide range of styles among the movements. - the composer

Movements are entitled: Calliope- Muse of Eloquence and Epic Poetry; Polyhymnia-Muse of Sacred Song; Thalia-Muse of Comedy; Melpomene;-Muse of Tragedy; Euterpe; Music of Lyric Poetry; Erato- Muse of Erotic Love; Clio-Muse of History; Urania-Muse of Astronomy; Terpsichore-Muse of Whirling Dance. Special effects included such as playing with the bell directed into the piano, using natural horn technique of removing hand from the bell and playing as overtones, flutter tonguing, half valve flutter-glissandi, overtone glissandi, and a variety of stopped horn techniques. -pc
