Grainger, Percy (Schmidt) Irish Tune from County Derry

Woodwind Quintets

  • Grainger, Percy (Schmidt)

Irish Tune from County Derry (Schmidt) [1111-1]

Traditional. Old Irish tune, also known as the Londonderry Air, originating from County Londonderry in Ireland. The popular song Danny Boy uses this melody with a more recent set of lyrics.

The tune is here incorrectly attributed to Australian composer Percy Grainger, whose concert band setting of this melody is famous among wind and brass players. In fact, the tune is ancient and its composer is unknown.

Horn plays solo in first verse, then it switches to flute. Many dynamics written in to aid the developing ensemble. Clarinet in Bb. horn in F. Score & parts. -AP
