20th Century (1997-98). Impressioni is a work consisting of five movements of different and contrasting styles and musical form intended to evoke visual and acoustic memories of faraway places, real or imagined, including the calls of the animals and other wildlife that live in those places. The first piece reflects a frightening atmosphere portrayed by hissing sounds and rattling noises suggesting an ominous presence of snakes. In contrast, the atmosphere of the second piece reflects a more peacefuland serene atmosphere featuring a virtual duet between a phlegmatic hippopotamus and a tuneful swallow. The third piece presents us with the happy and energenic interplay among monkeys and gorillas in the wild. The fourth piece places the listener in themysterious, dark, and solemn depths of the ocean to listen to its sounds. The final piece is a very upbeat and wildly energetic gallop towards the distant horizon. Score & parts. -Corrado Maria Saglietti
