Kadenzurtraub for Trombone, Vibes & Piano (2008)

21st Century (2008). In 1900 and 1901, John Philip Sousa's American ragtime band toured Europe with a certain Arthur Pryor. This trombonist is considered the inventor of the glissando, which seems to have mightily impressed many contemporary composers, such as Ravel and Stravinsky, Debussy, Schoenberg and Zemlinsky. Schoenberg used the effect as soon as 1902 in his Pelleas und Melisande, Ravel develops it exemplarily in 1908 in the finale of Rapsodie espagnole. At any rate the rise of jazz was mainly due to these very specific wind instrument sounds, combined with a new conception of rhythm and phrasing. At the time, improvisation was not yet highly developed and was mainly restricted to varying and accompanying the themes. But the world had never before heard the "howling" of cornets, clarinets and trombones; the impression was lasting. This leads us once again to a difference between jazz and classical music: whereas classical music strives after (albeit period-bound) ideals of sound, jazz players strive to find their own, individual, sound. Ideally, one recognizes the musician from the very first note. And so all great jazz masters have left their gigantic sound legacies. And you, dear performer, may/must play this piece in whatever soundyou like: the main thing is that you have one _ :-)) Dominik St”ger, for whom I have written this piece, also moves between these two worlds. That is, one can play it more classically or more jazz-like, one can't go very far astray here. And I want to add a little thank-you to all other trombonists who have ever worked with me: the young star Christian Radovan, avant-gardists George Lewis and Christian Muthspiel, "singer-too" Ray Anderson, funk trombonist Joseph Bowie, super virtuoso Adrian Mears, bass trombonist Ed Partyka, the Bulgarian, Georgi Kornazov, and Growl specialist Robert Bachner. -the publisher
