Sonata No 2 [advanced]
Sonata No. 2 was composed without extremes of range, technique or endurance in order to enhance the trumpet repertoire for players of all ages. Set in a the standard sonata form of three movements it is a melodic piece with contemporary flair. The composer hopes that this work will be fun to perform, enjoyable to hear, and serious enough to express one's self musically. First movement in 5/4 time can be described as mono-textural, the piano part being Chopinesque and the tumpet part pure melody. The melody of movement two is very simple as is it's form of AABA. The B secion is a permutation of the second movement melody from F.J Haydn's legendary trumpet Concerto in Eb. Last movement is short and exciting. The flashy technical passages in the finale, while challenging, actually sound more difficult to perform than they are.

Concerto in B, op 94 [Gr.6-advanced] [trumpet in Bb or C]
First movement is entitled Etude and cleverly incorporates short motives in sequential patterns which suggest technical exercises, but results in a lively opening concerto movement. The middle movement, Episode, begins quietly with a sustained melody played with a straight mute which gradually ascends above the staff and descends. This section alternates with a fanfare-like melody. Metrical changes, complex rhythms and varying dynamics provide ample expressive opportunities for the performer. The final movement, Fanfare, utiltizes motives from the previous two movements and features quick tempo changes and exciting technical passages, both slurred and articulated. The concerto finishes softly in 3/4 time and although not noted, apparently is to be played in one. pc

As it's title implies, this work aims to capture the spirit of optimistic vision which affected the British psyche at the end of the Second World War. The outer movements are energetic and brisk requiring virtuosic playing in an heroic style. The center movement is a cadenza to be played off-stage where the soloist is surrounded and supported by an additional group of fanfare players. Straight mute and "tin" mute required. Concerto [Gr.7-virtuosic]
This is the same John Williams who is well known for his movies scores including Star Wars, E.T. and the new Olympic Theme. For trumpet in C (Bb part also included). Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra is an extensive work making full use of the trumpet'scomplete range. The first movement cadenza in particular demands extensive playing in the low register, but moves quickly up to high C# and D at the cadenza's climax. Wide leaps are frequent especially in the slurred passages of the slow middle movement. Final movement moves at an agile pace amongst continually changing meters which add to its unpredictability. The soloist plays frequently between high C# and E above the staff, and must rapidly articulate in this register. An exciting, demanding work for the true virtuoso!
