After a brief introduction, the opening "ground bass" is played by the organ against the first variation, a flowing melody in the trumpet. Other unique features of this work are the intermittent lively trumpet cadenzas atop sustained tonic or open intervales in the organ/piano. Many creative expressive opportunities for the soloist as well as a few flashy technicalvariations. Just a Closer Walk With Thee [Gr.4-intermediate] (Haack)
Set of jazz variations on the popular gospel hymn for trumpet or treble clef baritone. Variations are written out although middle of the piece includes repeats for improvization. A cadenza brings the piece to a subtle conclusion in the low register (to low A below the staff). Glissandos, harmonic lip-slur and alternate valve techniques add interest to this unique arrangement.

La Virgen de la Macarena [advanced] (Marlatt)
Traditional Spanish tune set here for solo trumpet & piano. This arrangement is quite different than the classic Rafael Mendez (Koff) arrangement that has been played since the 1950's. It is at the same level of difficulty as the Mendez. Unlike the Mendez/Koff it has some opening fanfare-like material that appears before the first statement of the main Virgen theme. The triplet, 9-tuplet and 10-tuplet flourishes at measures 26 thru 29 have been simplified to standard 16th note runs. Like the Mendezit has a written cadenza near the end of the work, though it is slightly shorter. The endings, though somewhat different, share similar features and are clearly based on the same original material.

The composer says, "The three movements are designed to display three contrasting styles of trumpet performance: dramatic boldness, lyric expression and agile virtuosity." This work covers the gamut of trumpet technique and style. The entire range of the instrument is exploited (low G to high Db above the staff). A whisper mute is required. Double and triple tonguing, changing meters (3/8, 5/8,7/8), rubato playing, disjunct melodies are unpredictable. Opening melody of the Prelude develops via a serial approach. 21st Century (2001). I wrote "Three Episodes" for a recording project Phil Smith and I were doing for the International Trumpet Guild in 2001. Although I never gave the individual movements any titles - the first movement is basically a fanfare build on a series of pyramids in the piano along with declamatory trumpet writing. The second movement is very much like a lullaby, played on either the flugelhorn or trumpet. This is a song like piece with a middle section juxtaposing trumpet cadenzas with soft clusters in the piano. The third movement is basically a march with several contrasting sections. The intent of this...project was to give a good example of pieces that a fairly competent trumpet student could find playable and interesting. --Joseph Turrin If you are looking for a sophisticated piece with intermediate technical demands, this piece could be just the right fit. Intrada (1988)
Intrada was written for Philip Smith. "Consisting of several contrasting sections, it is," Mr. Turrin says, "a characteristically energetic statement, built around a recurrent fanfare motif which provides the material for even the most melodically expressive episodes. Superficially, there seems to be a great deal of variety. Closer inspection, however, shows the music to be in basic ABA form, with an off-beat blues feel to some of the writing, and, towards the close, a kind of jazzy scat line for trumpet over a walking string bass impression from piano. Scattered throughout are small (accompanied) cadenzas for the soloist, tying different sections together. The last cadenza is the climax of the work. It's followed by a quiet paragraph (a "mysteriously" haunting trumpet tune above a pedalled piano ostinato, varied from an earlier passage near the beginning) which fades to almost nothing before picking up memntum into a headlong coda, presto.

Collection of short movements, all very distinct yet tied together in various ways. The first movement Fanfare mixes the elements of a trumpet fanfare with a more lyrical quality. Haunting echoes and short repeated musical phrases are interspersed throughout. Intermezzo is a waltz with running eighth notes in the piano over which the trumpet sings a long sensual melody. Canto is rather free in form with much dialogue between both instruments. There is a lofty transparent quality in the movement that reminds the composer of the Chopin Nocturnes for piano. Tarantella is a quick six-eight romp that passes ideas between the two players and brings the suite to a joyful conclusion. - the composer For Bb or C trumpet. Flugelhorn part is optional. Variety of metrical changes, and rhythmic combinations. Range is from Bb below the staff to C above. Straight mute required. -pc
