Gillingham
When Speaks the Signal-Trumpet Tone [advanced]
Commissioned by the University of Georgia Bands, and premiered by them with Fred Mills (Canadian Brass) trumpet soloist. Program Notes: The three movements are continuous without pause. Movement I, "When stride the warriors of the storm" begins with a slow introductory section featuring undulating thirds in the winds, various percussion colors and rather militaristic motivic material coupled with the metallic articulations of the hi-hat. A contrasting secondary theme balances the movement with longing expressiveness which perhaps is suggestive of the homesickness of the G.I. alone on the foreign battlefield. "By angel hands to valor given," the second movement, begins with a snare drum roll followed by the solemn tom-toms. The movement is designed to evoke the image of a funeral procession to a military cemetery for the burial of a fallen comrade. Solo flugelhorn aptly shapes the melodic dirge. Toward the end of the movement a sweet, yet mournful melody emerges eulogizing the fallen comrade and signifying that he is "home" again. The final movement, "Shall thy proud stars resplendent shine" should evoke feelings of joy, victory and patriotism. The ascending pentachords in the solo piccolo trumpet with the four-note motive comprised of a perfect fifth followed by a descending second are the basis for most of the melodic material of the movement. Contrasting this main thematic material in a sort of rondo-like structure is a chorale, heard only by the wind orchestra throughout the movement, which hopefully carries all the emotion and glory of victory. —David R. Haydn
Trumpet Concerto - 2nd movement (Harnsberger)
Haydn's Trumpet Concerto is probably the most-performed trumpet concerto ever written. The second movement is known equally for both its beautiful melody and wonderful use of trumpet as a solo instrument. In this adaptation, the key is lowered to avoid the high notes of the original, sixteenth notes are eliminated by using a 3/4 time signature and difficult passages are simplified-making it ideal for younger soloists.

Smith
 Rondo
This solo was composed for trumpet virtuoso Doc Severinsen. Because of difficulty it remained in the rental catalogue for several years, but was released for sale in 1987. The work calls for great technical skill, range and intensity. By contrast, subtleand lyric playing is also required. (Also available for solo with piano, see item 41372).

 Chronicles [advanced]
Composer's notes: I composed Chronicles during the summer of 1998. It is the second large trumpet work I have written for Philip Smith, the first being the Concerto for Trumpet commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in 1988. This work in many ways could also be considered a concerto, if not in a strict sense of form, at least in its expansiveness. The first movement (Prologue) has several thematic ideas that interweave throughout. There is a mixture of pointillism versus lyricism here along with a driving pulse create by running scale passages shared between soloist and ensemble. I also use a fanfare-like motif (as in the opening solo trumpet cadenza) which serves as a unifying force that reappears throughout. There is a quick coda, ending with a seven-bar chorale in which the solo trumpet recaps material from the opening cadenza. The second movement (Lamentation) begins with a chorale and consists of several contrasting sections: Section A, the opening chorale with the soloist entering inthe latter half of the section. Following is Section B (a restless agitato). This section builds to a short climax which leads us to Section C (a plaintive melody in the clarinets followed by a building of tension in the brass). Section D follows (a lyrical trumpet melody with a steady ostinato accompaniment). There is a short trumpet cadenza followed by the return of the opening chorale. The movement slowly fades into silence. The last movement (Epilogue) is a rondo in 3/4 time. There are several sections, all of which lead to a trumpet cadenza. Following the cadenza is a fast coda bringing back material from the first movement. The solo trumpet states one last high staccato fanfare as the piece whirls to it conclusion. —Joseph Turrin

 Essays [advanced]
Essays for Trumpet is a four-movement suite for trumpet and wind ensemble. Each movement is written in a contrasting style, featuring a wide array of trumpet techniques. The first movement, Fanfare, begins with the solo trumpet playing lyrical lines over the ensemble. The character quickly changes, with the trumpet and ensemble trading short clarion calls. The movement ends with a flurry of activity between solo and ensemble, culminating in the final chord. Movement two, Gallop, begins with a flash, with the soloist, negotiating numerous double-tonguing hurdles. The movement races off at a presto tempo, with both soloist and ensemble trading the melody. A short interlude with a jazz flavor features the soloist before the movement races to the finish. Movement three, Ballad, showcases the lyrical side of both soloist and ensemble. The final movement, Dance, utilizes a five-part rondo form. It is highly spirited in nature, featuring lively melodies and rhythms.
