Anderson Complete Method for Alto Trombone, v.1 The Anderson Method is one of the better methods for alto on the market in that it actually gives written instruction and advice on how to approach the horn. Many other books merely present the player with a series of exercises and etudes in the alto clef. The Anderson helps the tenor player develop strategies and techniques for switching to alto so that they actually learn to play the horn rather than learn a few rote tunes. -cdp

Arban Complete Method for Trombone & Euphonium (Alessi & Bowman) In this new edition, the comments of Messrs. Alessi and Bowman are presented unencumbered by pre-existing editorial material. Both bring impeccable credentials to the task, and their comments provide wonderful insights into their individual approaches tomusical and technical matters. In addition to these comments, there are other improvements: the format is clean and readable; all of the well-known misprints and typographical errors of the original edition seem to have been corrected; and suggestions for alternate positions/fingerings have been left out completely. Included are some materials which previously were available only in the trumpet book. These include the Duets, The Art of Phrasing, and additional theme and variation pieces at the back ofthe book. The book itself is spiral-bound so as to lay flat on the music stand. (Condensed from a review in the Online Trombone Journal by John Seidel. Arban First & Second Year (Prescott) This book was originally written in the 1930's with the intention of being used with the (then) popular Prescott Technique system. The Prescott system is largely forgotten these days, however this book lives on as a useful collection of essential Arbans etudes. It is essentially a collection of excerpts from the complete trombone version of the Arbans Famous Method (our number 01263), amounting to 79 pages. Appropriate for all players, from intermediate on up for the development of solid technique.
(easier example, page 15)
(more difficult example, page 66).

Bitsch Rhythmical Studies (15) (Masson) Perhaps one of the most popular etude books for trombone. The Bitsch etudes are famous for their ability to help players gain a mastery of complex and/or unexpected rhythms. Used in just about every college level program, each etude is a character piece, focusing on a set of rhythmic issues. These include mixed meter, displaced emphasis, beams over barlines, downbeat rests, tuplets, syncopation, "blurring" of the beat and/or meter/barline, ties into strong beats, dotted eighth-16th vs. triplets, etc. Uses both tenor and bass clef liberally, including many mid-measure clef changes. --cdp

Blazhevich School for Trombone in Clefs & Alto Studies (Kharlamov/Deryugin/Stare) The School for Trombone in Clefs first appeared in 1925. A later edition appeared in 1939, which represented the full maturation of the composer's ideas. Today's new "original authentic" edition is based on that final 1939 Russian publication. It corrects errors and omissions found in previous American editions which had been based on the 1925 version. It also removes all non authentic editorial content such as dynamics, articulations and tempo indications that had been added along the way. The original Forward by Blazhevich has been restored, with some additional advice provided by the editors (clearly marked as such) to bring the language into the 21st century. Thus, in this edition, the music and text are returned to their authentic state, exactly as Blazhevich intended. As an added feature, each section of the book and many of the individual studies have been annotatated by Ward Stare, principal trombonist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. These are clearly indicated and are intended to act as performance advice, rather than definite instruction. Alto Studies: Also included as a bonus in this new edition are the Alto Studies, previously unpublished and available here for the first time. Covering 50 pages, these 41 fully developed studies help the trombonist not only gain basic ability in alto clef, but also go beyond basic technical proficiency to full mastery. Appropriate for use on alto or tenor trombone. NOTE: The School for Trombone in Clefs is the official replacement for the various "Clef Studies" books previously published by International Music and Leeds/MCA Music/Hal Leonard, edited by Allen Ostrander and Donald Hunsberger respectively. This volume does not contain the Sequences. These are due to be published in a separate volume at a later date.

Bona Rhythm Articulation [Part 2 & 3 of Complete] (Fitch) [bass clef] Appropriate for any bass clef instrument, including bassoon, trombone, euphonium, tuba, cello or double bass. The original "Complete Method for Rhythmical Articulation" was intended for vocal use to teach problems of sight reading, rhythmical and intervallic accuracy, and "articulation" in the sense of correct pronunciation of solfeggio syllables. This bass clef edition retains the qualities of the original, but "articulation" now means accuracy of tonguing on wind instruments and of correct bowing on the strings. In addition, phrase marks and slurs have been added where they are appropriate, and keys have been changed in some of the studies in order that the range of the study remains useful for bass clef instruments. 42 etudes over 47 pages, bass clef throughout. Omitted from the original vocal edition is "Part I," which dealt mainly with solfeggio syllables over a series of 74 short scaler etudes.

Bordner Practical Studies, First Book of The prime objective of this book is that of fostering reading ability in the young student. It should be used as supplementary material or as a second method. Bordner Practical Studies, Second Book of This book of original exercises is the sequel to the first book in this series. The etudes are a mixture of the rhythmic pattern and solo type. Problems of rhythm, technic, and range are dealt with logically and progressively and with ample preparation. In the case of the trombone, special emphasis was placed on writing exercises which would allow economy of slide movement through the use of substitute positions. The book is intended to be supplemental in nature and should be a value to the student by supplying additional material in certain developmental areas encountered in the student's regular method book. Bass clef throughout.
