Pryor
Solos for Trombone (8) [advanced]
Arthur Pryor (1870-1942) was one of the best-known trombonists and bandsmen of his day. Trombone soloist for John Philip Sousa's celebrated band beginning in 1892, he later functioned as assistant conductor of the Sousa band (1894-1903) before starting his own ensemble. His more than 300 compositions include novelty tunes, ragtime pieces and operettas, but of course he is best remembered today for his virtuosic solos for his own instrument. This new book collects eight of his most popular solos in one volume and includes Blue Bells of Scotland, Fantastic Polka, The Little Chief (Polka Caprice), Love's Enchantment (Valse de Concert), The Patriot, La Petite Suzanne, Starlight and Thoughts of Love. Late Romantic/20th Century. The career of the English composer, Roger Quilter (1877-1953) has many parallels with that of Percy Grainger, who was one of Quilter's classmates at the Frankfurt Conservatory in the 1890's. Quilter's light orchestral pieces were once staples of Sir Henry Wood's Promenade Concerts in London but he is best known today for his many beautiful songs. Love's Philosophy was written in 1905, early in Quilter's career, and is a setting of a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley.

One of his most famous works, the the Prelude in C#m for piano is also from this group of works. This opus (opus 3 number 3) is sometimes referred to as the Melody in E. 20th Century. Transcription. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) was a prominent French composer of the Impressionistic school. He was a transitional composer in that he combined traditional forms with lyrical, romantic melodies and the fresh compositional techniques of impressionism. Ravel's prolific output is characterized by masterful writing and depth of expression. He wrote primarily for virtuoso performers, producing works for solo piano, voice, chamber ensembles, orchestra, ballet and opera, however, his goal was musical artistry, not technical show. His tuneful melodies are often modal, reminiscent of the Russian masters, and his orchestration abilities inpired and informed every major composer of the 20th Century. Although his harmonies are commonly based on triads, they are often indicated by fifths or octaves. Another distinctive mark of his style is the increased use of dissonance. Through counterpoint, he added non-chord tones that created frequent major sevenths and minor ninths.

Leloir/Billaudot: Old style engraving, a little faint and not as easy to read. Tempo directions include MM markings. Rehearsal letters are in different locations than Kalmus. Some multi-measure rests have been replaced with orchestral cues. There is onlyone page turn, which is well planned (pages arranged 1-2 front and 3-4 back). The articulations follow closely (but not exactly) to the Kalmus. Leloir has added many parenthetical dynamic markings between the originals. There is an error in the 5th measure before U (F should be D). The notes and rhythms of the cadenzas have not been altered, but have been heavily annotated for style, with a few ossia notes (pedal F and Eb) added to the end of the second cadenza. The Kalmus' E-Eb error has also beencorrected. All octaves are the same as in the Kalmus edition.
