The title of this work refers to the journey through Sweden in Selma Lagerlof's book, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgerson, in which Vineta is the city under a curse. Situated off the Gotland coast, Vineta only apperas from the water every hundred years and then sinks into the sea again. The music does not relate programmatically to the myth; it is simply the expression of associations with ringing bells sinking into the sea. A sense of "pastness" prevails in and beyond this piece. -- the composer. Duration: approx 7 minutes. Uses Harmon mute and contemporary techniques.

Excito Quod Evenit owes its existence to a request for something from a Trombone playing friend of Peter Swan, Neil Gallie, who at the time was also one of his private music students. Neil Gallie had also had Chris Houlding as a Trombone teacher which ties in nicely with the first appearance of the piece on CD, Chris Holding's "Houlding His Own" and who, indeed, gave its first performance. As a work for Solo Trombone the composer wanted to explore the dramatic and lyrical qualities of the instrument performing both the usual (?) fanfare music with which it is associated and the long soaring lyrical lines of which it is supremely capable. He also wanted to explore the complete register of this remarkable instrument and, in a limited way, some of the special effects it is capable of. Although the four movements can be played separately, or in any order or indeed in the printed order, there is a 'through line' of thought from Fanfare & Toccata I to Lied, Dreamscape and the final Toccata & Fanfare II (La Chasse). One idea which Chris has explored in his public performances is to space the four movements through a programme and perhaps move around the platform area in the process. Peter Swan fully approves of this imaginative approach to programming.

Like the Bach suites, they represent a major composer's contribution to the literature of a solo instrument and are a valuable resource for study and performance. Unlike the Bach suites, these fantasies are composed for a wind instrument and thereby require little compromise on the part of the trombonist. Phrase-breathing is an inherent part of their construction, while double-stops are not. Seven of the Fantasiesare in bass clef, five are in tenor clef. All are playable on the tenor trombone, although some of them favor the lower register and will sound well on the bass trombone.
