Qty. Wills Tingueley's Fountain [advanced] [12 trombones] Tinguely's Fountain is outside the theatre in Basel, Switzerland, the one where small gang of enigmatic machines twitter and thrash, all at different speeds, throwing water everywhere. It is the perfect metaphor for this piece, which is not so much for an ensemble as for a crowd. The proper question for a composer faced with so many trombones is not "how do I make a nice tidy decorous sound" but "how do I make this mob do something worth seeing?" So each clump of trombones does its individual twittering or thrashing thing, then we put them all together and see what happens. What happens, as you will see, is quite a racket! The music is organised on quite a complex mathematical pattern in order to make it coherent, but if you really want to spend time analysing it then you should consider dancing in a fountain until you feel better and see the error of your ways. Some of the twittering and thrashing gets mixed up between the groups, but then Tingueley?s masterpiece is a messy fountain. Ideally, there should be people throwing water too, if the weather and venue permit. Perhaps you could play it on a beach.

Qty. Winter Festfanfare [advanced] (DePaolo) [12 trombones & opt timp.] Written in 1960 for the opening of the World Eucharist Congress held in Munich, Germany, this fanfare was originally set for seven part mixed brass choir. It has been transcribed and arranged here for 12 trombones in two 6-part antiphonal choirs with optional tympani. Festfanfare is cast in one continuous movement, with alternating fanfare and chorale sections. Set in E flat, the entire piece is powerful and rousing, the coda section especially so with its Strauss-like layered rhythms and blazing finale. Due to its strong compositional integrity, it can readily be used as an opener or a closer, as well as anywhere within a program, Although tympani is called for in the score, it is not necessary, and if desired can be covered by cues (included) within the trombone choir. The original brass septet can still be purchased by using order numbers 12143 (parts) and 12144 (score).
