Anton von Webern's inspiration for The String Quartet came from the triptych, a painting by Giovanni Segantini. There are three distinct segments within the one-movement piece. One of the early Webern works discovered by musicologist Hans Moldenhauer after Webern's death, String Quartet had its world premiere on May 26, 1962 during the First International Webern Festival in Seattle, Washington.

Ulla in Africa
Heiner Wiberny has written this joyful composition for his wife Ulla, who has a special affinity for African Music. The listener recognizes immediately the sound and flavor of "African Highlife" and "Latin Funk". The composition consists of the following parts: chorale-intro, prelude, ABA-theme, transition, violin- and violasolos with 'break'-intros, prelude, AB-theme, Coda. The soloists may play either the written transcriptions or their own improvised solos, whereby the corresponding ensemble sections can be repeated. The phrase markings offer help in the correct stylistic interpretation of the piece, but they can also be changed according to the individual preferences. "Klaus the fiddler" (Klaus der Geiger) gave the world premier of this work with the String Quartet of the Cologne Kunst-Salon Orchestra (Streichquartett des K”lner Kunstsalonorchesters). Klaus and the string quartet deserve my special thanks.

Zemlinsky

Zemlinksy (1871-1942) was a prominent Austrian composer and conductor, whose lush music has been enjoying renewed interest. Like so many artists of the era, his conducting and teaching career in Germany, Prague and Austria was made difficult, then impossible during the turbulent 1930's. Zemlinsky fled to the United States in 1938. Zemlinsky had the same extreme expression in his music as his contemporaries Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, but his music remained firmly tonal throughout his career. These two fascinating movements date from 1927, published posthumously. They are in addition to the composer's four finished string quartets.
