The Ithaca College Trombone Troupe has released a CD entitled Echoes, Moods, and Reflections comprised of new works for trombone choir, plus one unpublished arrangement. Two of the works are past winners ot the Allen Ostrander Composition Prize sponsored by Ithaca College and Lyceum Press. Others are works that were commissioned by or written especially for this ensemble.

1. Paul Goldstaub: Venetian Echoes. This is a two-choir work that combines contemporary (but tonal) harmonies, free & metered rhythms, and other modern techniques while still evoking images of old world Gabrieli scores. This work was commissioned in 1989 and was premiered at the New York Brass Conference that same year.
2. Siekmann: Three Moods For Trombone Choir. This is a multi movement, accessable tonal work, commissioned by the Troupe and performed at the 1993 Fruehling Posaunen Festival at the Eastman School of Music. It is characterized by meter and key changes, plus the shifting of lead lines among the seven parts.
3. Prize winning composer Dana Wilson's I Wanna Dance On My Grave was commissioned in 1990 by the Troupe and premiered the following spring. The work is derived from the old spiritual "I Wanna Die Easy" but adds some other strengths of the trombone, including it's ability to punch rhythms and display unmatched power.
4. Elegy for Van, by Dave Anderson (son of bass trombonist Ed Anderson), was the first winner of the Allen Ostrander Composition Prize in 1995. The work is for solo bass trombone and trombone ensemble. On this CD, the soloist is Fred Boyd of the Syracuse Symphony. The title work is of course a reference to Lewis Van Haney, for whose memory it is dedicated.
5. Paul Barsom's Children of Jericho is perhaps the most adventurous work on the CD. It was written for the Eastman Trombone choir and premiered by that Ensemble at the 1995 Eastern Trombone Workshop. This work was chosen as the second winner of the Allen Ostrander Prize in 1997 and was judged by all to be a significant addition to the trombone choir literature. The work uses both traditional and aleatoric techniques, and is very exciting for the performer as well as the audience (even non-trombonists).
6. A Celtic Blessing was originally composed for SATB choir by David Riley, a well known and respected vocal-jazz and choir writer/arranger. The original acappella jazz ballad was published in 1997 by Shawnee Press. This new composition utilizes a vocal soloist plus trombone choir, and brings a different life to his lush jazz harmonies.
7. The Mozart Ave Verum Corpus has been arranged for trombone choir by at least two other fine writers. This unpublished edition was arranged by Allen Ostrander especially for the Troupe in 1993. It is set for two 4-part choirs, one representing the orchestra, and the other the choir. The choice of this work on the CD was to honor "Mr. O's" "quiet simplicity, his reverence for...music, and his love of the...trombone."
