Our Search feature is a simple, basic system requiring very little from you to work well. There is no need to fill out multiple boxes or specify the category of your search. Simply enter one or more key words and click Search. Your key words can be a composer or manufacturer's (brand) name, a title, a description, an arranger or many other descriptive words. Once entered, Search locates products that include ALL the key words you specified. These are then displayed for you to browse through. If you don't get any hits, try reducing the number of keywords. If you get too many hits, try adding a keyword that is unique to the item you're looking for.
How does Search work?
Hickey's Search looks through every product's record on this website and displays those records that include all of your keywords. Items that only contain some of your keywords are excluded. Also included are partial matches (i.e. "bass" will also find "bassoon," as will "soon"). For music & books, it searches through the item's composer, title, arranger/editor, department (i.e. "violin solo") and additional notes or comments. For CDs, Search also looks at the artist (i.e."Christian Lindberg"). For accessory items and instruments, instead of composer/title/arranger, Search looks at brand, model and description.
Example 1:
Your Query: "I'm looking for a electronic digital metronome made by Korg..."
Keywords to Use: korg metronome
Search Results: A list of all metronomes we sell that are made by Korg. There are only a few. Notice that I did not use the words "electronic" or "digital" in the keywords list. Start simple, using only a few words. If Search had displayed too many metronomes, then you could go back and add one or both of these words to narrow the results.
Example 2:
Your Query: "I'm looking for a good edition of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas..."
Keywords to Use: beethoven violin sonata
Search Results: A list of all the Beethoven Sonatas (singles and collections) for violin. Specifiying "violin" in your search eliminates the hundreds of other sonatas Beethoven wrote for other instruments. If you wanted to further limit the results to collections of sonatas only, then instead of "sonata" (singular) use "sonatas" (plural).
Example 3:
Your Query: "I'm looking for a case for an old Conn alto sax..."
Keywords to Use: "alto sax" case
Search Results: A list of all the cases we carry for alto sax. Notice I put quotes around "alto sax" because it is a phrase or word pair. I could have searched without the quotes, but I would have received more results, none of which would have been any help. Notice also that gig bags are included in the results, because they are in the "Saxophone Case/Bag" department. Also, you may see several unrelated items. These have been displayed because they too contain both the keywords "alto sax" and "case" either in full or in part.
Catalog Number Search
If you happen to know our 5-digit catalog number for the item, use the lower "Search by Catalog Number" box only. Be sure to make the number a full 5 digits long by adding zeros to the front if necessary (i.e., change "32" to "00032"). If you have a long list of items you'd like to order by catalog number, you should instead use our "Order By Catalog Number" page at http://www.hickeys.com/pages/lookup.htm.
