Buss Capriccio For trio of clarinet, trombone & percussion. A rather whimsical composition. The overall structure of the work is related to sonata-rondo form. Following an introduction, the frolicking Exposition unfolds only to be interrupted by a chorale-like episode followed by a paraphrase of the opening "thematic" material. The development section consists primarily of cadenzas for the percussionist, trombonist, and clarinetist respectively. (The cadenzas are separated by colorful transitional passages.) The clarinet cadenza is abruptly interrupted by the percussionist and trombonist leading to a section in Dixieland style. The composition concludes with a Recapitulation and Coda.Capriccio subtly pokes fun at the pyrotechnical characteristics exhibited by many contemporary compositions and the same time hints at a parallel with similar elements in Dixieland and jazz. The work was premiered in at the University of South Florida in Tampa by the composer on trombone, clarinetist Judy E. Buss, and percussionist Robert McCormick on November 24, 1981. The instrumentation includes 5 tom-toms, snare drum, tambourine, suspended cymbals, cowbells, triangle, tam-tam, bell tree, one timpani, vibraphone and bells.

Buss Diversions 21st Century. Diversions for flute and trombone duo by Howard J. Buss was composed during the Spring of 2009 and is dedicated to flutist Kristen Stoner and trombonist Art Jennings, The four colorful and entertaining movements are programmatic in a general way. "First Impressions" is a friendly musical conversation reflecting the ebb and flow of ideas that two people may exchange and develop when meeting the first time. The music has an easygoing quality with the discourse becoming quite excited at times. "The Challenge" begins with a flute cadenza that highlights the agility the instrument with rapid tonguing, quick dashes of sound, and trills. When the trombonist enters and demonstrates to the surprised flutist the ability to execute similar passages also with agility and finesse, it becomes apparent that a challenge has been issued. For the remainder of the movement the two players try to impress one another with their individual technical prowess. The manner in which the two finish the movement together suggests the contest is a draw. "By Starlight" has a beautiful and romantic atmosphere. The lyricism is woven into a predominately consonant harmonic tapestry that at times melts into poignant dissonance. By contrast, the freewheeling final movement, "Carnival", is bright and exuberant. The colorful music and rondo-like form is suggestive of a carousel in motion. -the publisher

Mendelssohn Nocturno (Hogwood) In 1826 Mendelssohn composed a Nocturno for a Bad Doberan spa band which consisted of 11 wind players (flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, trumpet and english bass horn*). The composition was later used as the basis for his Overture for Winds op. 24 which requires much larger forces. This Nocturno, a chamber music work in the divertimento tradition, was not published during Mendelssohn's lifetime; it appears here in a first ever critical edition. Edited by Christopher Hogwood. Tull Chamber Concerto (1991) 20th Century (1991). American composer. For trombone solo and woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn). Set in the classical three-movement format, the concerto exploits the unique characteristics of the trombone, both technical and lyrical. The first movement is in a fairly strict sonata-allegro form with a solo cadenza. The second movement is a through-composed tender song that allows the soloist to display the expressive nature of the trombone. The end of the movement connects directly with the final movement in the nature of a perpetual motion scherzo in modified rondo form. Appended to the end of the movement is a chorale-variation presentation of the sixteenth century hymn tune, Le Cantique di Simeon by Louis Bourgeois. Ziani Quel Sembiante Cosi Bello (Scwartz & LaFratta) For tenor trombone, soprano voice & keyboard (piano, organ or harpsichord). Antonio Ziani (b Venice, c1653; d Vienna, 22 Jan 1715) presented more than twenty operas in Venice beginning in 1679 and was employed by the Duke of Mantua becoming the maestro di cappella at Santa Barbara in Mantua in 1686. In 1700, he was appointed to the position of Imperial Vice-Hofkapellmeister in Vienna. After the death of Antonio Pancotti, the Imperial Hofkapellmeister, Ziani assumed the responsibilities of that position in 1709, but was not officially appointed to that post until 1712, the year Charles VI became Emperor. Ziani was well known for his operas, oratorios, and many other sacred works. Prolific in his use of the trombone in his oratorios, Ziani wrote many arias in Il mistico Giobbe (1704) and La morte vinta sul Calvario (1706) containing parts for trombone, small ensemble, and voice.
