Qty. Buss NEW ITEM! Diversions [advanced] 21st Century. Diversions for flute and trombone duo by Howard J. Buss was composed during the Spring of 2009 and is dedicated to flutist Kristen Stoner and trombonist Art Jennings, The four colorful and entertaining movements are programmatic ina general way. "First Impressions" is a friendly musical conversation reflecting the ebb and flow of ideas that two people may exchange and develop when meeting the first time. The music has an easygoing quality with the discourse becoming quite excitedat times. "The Challenge" begins with a flute cadenza that highlights the agility the instrument with rapid tonguing, quick dashes of sound, and trills. When the trombonist enters and demonstrates to the surprised flutist the ability to execute similarpassages also with agility and finesse, it becomes apparent that a challenge has been issued. For the remainder of the movement the two players try to impress one another with their individual technical prowess. The manner in which the two finish the movement together suggests the contest is a draw. "By Starlight" has a beautiful and romantic atmosphere. The lyricism is woven into a predominately consonant harmonic tapestry that at times melts into poignant dissonance. By contrast, the freewheelingfinal movement, "Carnival", is bright and exuberant. The colorful music and rondo-like form is suggestive of a carousel in motion. -the publisher

The opening motives in both parts undergo almost continuous development throughout the work, often giving the music a spontaneous, improvisatory feel. At times the music has a playful, almost frolicking quality. At other times mysterious and introspective passages contrast with aggressive, intense sections to create an atmosphere of moodiness. Qty. Charriere Au Coeur du Tibet [advanced] 21st Century. Au coeur du Tibet (In the Heart of Tibet) was commissioned by the - then newly founded - Association for the development of saxophone. The members wanted to mark that event with several first performances given simultaneously in different cities of Switzerland, France and United States, which all were schedulded February 11, 2000. The piece starts with rhythms and finger drummings on the soundboard of the guitar. Then, within a long meditation, the heart starts to beat, interrupted by silences. The tension culminates into a sequence full of life and movements, followed by rhythmical noises on the saxophone keys accompanied by the gitarre, as a reminiscence of tibetan sounds: spoken words, ritual horn (Dung Chen) and a drum. Tangling Shadows was commissioned by oboist Amy Anderson and percussionist Lisa Rogers, both professors in the School of Music at Texas Tech University. The piece was premiered on November 8, 2006 at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Austin, Texas. The 8-minute work is based upon the Pablo Neruda poem, "Thinking, Tangling Shadows." Fragments of the text may be found throughout the score for reference.
