Wilder Sonata [advanced] 20th Century. Another of the "Top 10" bass trombone works, the Wilder Sonata employs a jazz approach and is reminiscent of mid-20th Century jazz and popular (pre-rock) music. Set in five movements, the work requires the player to "loosen up" and yet maintain time and accuracy. It is especially well written for the bass trombone, perfectly idiomatic, lying well and taking advantage of its unique range possibilities, among other things. Wilder was well known in his day as a writer of popular songs, many of which were recorded by Frank Sinatra. -cdp

Wolking Bass Trombone Music [advanced] 21st Century (2007). Bass Trombone Music by Henry Wolking is a four-movement Sonata for Bass Trombone & Piano written in 2007 for Professor Donn Schaefer of the University of Utah. The work was premiered at the 2008 Eastern Trombone Workshop by ProfessorSchaefer. The 1st movement entitled "Roger" is about Roger Miller, the country singer. Movement II is after "Lou Harrison" a "mystic" classical composer. Mr. Wolking's English Setter "Simon" is the star of movement III and "Thelonius Monk's "Blue Monk" legendary jazz composition is the inspiration for movement IV.
