Introduction, Romance et Allegro is one of numerous pieces written for French bass trombonist Paul Bernard. Although quite satisfying, the three movement work is rarely played. The opening movement is beautiful and has an ethereal quality that reminds one of an impressionistic painting. The second movement opens with a playful theme before turning to a more serious mood. The last movement is very rhythmic and concludes with an open cadenza. Extended harmonies in the piano and chromaticism in the solo part are both prevalent throughout the three movements. --DP Pollard

Romantic. An original work for bass trombone, edited into a modern edition by Blair Bollinger of the Philadephia Orchestra. Performed by Mr. Bollinger on his CD, "Fancy Free." This work is readily playable on tenor trombone with F attachment or 4-valve euphonium. Movements are entitled "Andacht" (Devotion), a lyrical work in a style reminiscent of Brahms, and "Abendreigen" (Evening Round Dance), a moderatley up-tempo 3/4 dance in the style of a German Landler.

Concerto in One Movement [Concerto No 1] [Gr.5-early advanced] (Ostrander)
Romantic. Same work as the Concerto No 1. Edited by Allen Ostrander from an old original copy he found in the US Library of Congress. Published by Edition Musicus in 1960 as a single edition for either tuba or bass trombone. Both instruments use the samesolo part. There are some minor differences between this edition and the later 1980 revision as published by Friederich Hofmeister. Differences include: (1) m.23 low Ab instead of low Cb; (2) m.54-56 16th note duples instead of triplets; (3) m.110 16th note duples instead of 16th note triplet; (4) m.119 has a septuplet on beat four instead of a 32nd run. The most obvious difference in the piano part is the omission of a 4 bar introduction present in the Hofmeister edition. Other difference include various articulations, slurs, etc. There is no orchestral material available for this edition, however, there is an orchestral set available as a rental for the Hofmeister edition mentioned above.

20th Century. The Sonata for Bass Trombone is one of the most popular works for this instrument [ITA Journal, Winter 1999], written and first performed in 1962 at the Eastman School of Music. It is a tonal work set in three movements, "Allegro Non Troppo," "Andantino" and "Vivace."
