Contrapunctus 9, from Art of the Fugue (Glasel)
Baroque period. Ninth movement (BWV 1080, Nr 9) of Bach's final opus, subtitled "Alla Duodecima." Originally written in 4-part SATB open score form, and now believed to have been intended for performance on the harpsichord. Contrapunctus IX is an example of a 4-part double fugue. This particular arrangement of "Contra Nine" is perhaps the most well known and oft performed of the 16 numbered Contrapuncti. Besides simply laying well for brass quintet, much 3-part texture and a low ending make this arrangement less taxing than most Bach transcriptions. Transcribed down a step from the original key of Dm into Cm.-cdp

Contrapunctus 12-1, from Art of the Fugue [advanced] (Hornek) [210.11 or 211.01]
Baroque period. Twelfth movement (BWV 1080, Nr 12-1) of Bach's final opus. Originally written in 4-part SATB open score form, and now believed to have been intended for performance on the harpsichord. There are two Contrapunctus 12's - one in "recto" orforward motion (this item), and one in "inverso" or inversion (item 70079), where the pitch material is mirrored (upside down). Contrapunctus XII Rectus is thus an example of a mirror fugue. The trombone part is labeled for euphonium, but is absolutely performable upon trombone. There are two Contrapunctus 12's - one in "recto" or forward motion (item 70078), and one in "inverso" or inversion (this item), where the pitch material is mirrored (upside down). Contrapunctus XII Inversus is thus an example of a mirror fugue. The trombone part is labeled for euphonium, but is absolutely performable upon trombone. Bach
Contrapunctus 13-1 for Harpsichord Duo [advanced] (Hornek) [210.11 or 211.01]
Baroque period. This work is sometimes included as a part of Bach's final opus, the "Art of the Fugue," a collection of Contrapuncti and Canons. However, it doesn't logically fit Bach's carefully constructed cycle of fugues(1). The original work, correctly entitled "Contrapunctus 13 Inversus, Alio Modo Fuga a 2 Clavier," is an arrangement by Bach himself of Contrapunctus 13-1 for two harpsichords. (Note: this publication indicates the title as "Contrapunctus 18." This we believe to be an error.) The trombone part is labeled for euphonium, but is absolutely performable upon trombone. As performed by the Harmonic Brass of Munich, Germany.
(1) From the Forward, by Davitt Moroney, of the G. Henle edition of Art of the Fugue, edition number HN423 (our number 01351) and HN9423 (our number 6093).-cdp

Bach
Contrapunctus 13-1, from Art of the Fugue [advanced] (Hornek) [210.11 or 211.01]
Baroque period. Contrapunctus 13-1 (Inversus) (1) is the fifteenth movement (BWV 1080, Nr 13-1) of Bach's final opus. Originally written in 4-part SATB open score form, and now believed to have been intended for performance on the harpsichord. There are two Contrapunctus 13's - one in "recto" or forward motion (item 70080), and one in "inverso" or inversion (this item), where the pitch material is mirrored (upside down). Contrapunctus XIII Inversus is thus an example of a mirror fugue. The trombone part is labeled for euphonium, but is absolutely performable upon trombone. As performed by the Harmonic Brass of Munich, Germany.

1 The apparent mis-numbering here has an explanation. The BWV numbering of the two Contrapunctus 13's is reversed here intentionally, with 13-Recto as BWV 1080-2 and 13-Inverso as BWV 1080-1. This is a result of the Bach family's erroneous numbering and ordering of the Contrapunctus XIII twins after JS Bach's death. In reality, 13-2 comes before 13-1, as Recto must logically precede Inverso. -cdp

Originally written in 4-part SATB open score form, and now believed to have been intended for performance on the harpsichord. Bach
Contrapunctus 14, from Art of the Fugue (Allen)
Baroque period. Contrapunctus 14 is the sixteenth and final movement labeled as a "Contrapunctus" (BWV 1080, Nr 19) of Bach's final opus. Bach never actually completed number 14, as he died prematurely of a stroke before it was finished. It is thus offered here in its original, uncompleted form. This fugue was originally written in 4-part SATB open score form and is now believed to have been intended for performance on the harpsichord. Contrapunctus XIV is an example of a quadruple fugue, whose final fugue subject, not introduced due to the composer's death, was to be based on Bach's own name (B-A-C-H, where, in German notation, B is B-flat, and H is B-natural). This according to competant scholarly research. Bach would have thus "signed" his final work. Boulder Brass series. Originally in D minor, here transcribed and arranged down a step into C minor. Trumpet 1 in Eb or Bb. -cdp
