Part of the Boulder Brass series. This march came close to being called "The Devil's Deputy." But due to financial arguments, Sousa abandoned this title and its soon-to-be dedication. Sousa was touring in Chicago observing the spectacle America, when a large backdrop depicting The Liberty Bell was lowered. Sounsa's band manager George Hinton suggested the title "The Liberty Bell" for Sousa's recently completed march. Coincidentally, Sousa received a letter from his wife, saying that his son marched in a parade which honored the Liberty Bell, which was on tour in Philadelphia. Arguably John Phillip Sousa's most famous march here transcribed for brass quintet. This unique arrangement disperses the melodic material throughout the ensemble, especially to the second trumpet. The piccolo trumpet of course covers the famous "piccolo" counter melody, but also functions as more of a supportive timbral role, weaving in out of the melody and picking up off-beats and other accompanimental figures. Daniel Speer, 1636-1707, who is perhaps better known today for his Sonata for Four Trombones, was a writer of many works for instrumental ensemble. These two Sonatas, taken from Das Erbe deutscher Music, v.14, have been set and edited for the moden brassquintet by Donald Miller. The preferred instrumentation is 203.00, but there is a horn substitute part to make the ensemble 213.00. Tuba could perform the bottom part instead of trombone. The two trumpets parts are in C, and have a combined range of F1 to A2. The first trombone part stays above the staff for both pieces, but never exceeds high A. The third trombone requires a trigger for only two notes (low Ds).
