20th Century. American composer. Three original movements entitled: Rock; Refrain; Rag. First movement is a driving rock (quarter note equals 144). It begins with an extended tuba solo which leads to other brief solos throughout the ensemble, powerful rhythmic ensemble statements, a few quick tonguing passages and some high first trumpet playing up to high D above the staff. Refrain is a contrasting slow movement and provides solo opportunities for the second trumpet, French horn, trombone andespecially the first trumpet which closes the movement with a free cadenza. The Ragtime movement has fingering and rhythmic challenges throughout and features a humorous solo line ascending through the lower voices, descending back down, up again all theway through the upper voices, back down again and back up AGAIN before heading back to the trio section! Trombone occasionally plays in tenor clef. Duration is approx 7:30 minutes. -pc

Susannata [advanced]
Cuban waltz. Susannata begins with an extended French horn solo over sustained chords. Chord changes are written above the French horn parts to facilitate improvisation. Second half of this piece features a lively, syncopated piccolo trumpet solo which is briefly handed off to the French horn, and then becomes a feature duet between these two instruments with Cuban dance rhythms in the rest of the ensemble. Technical demands are intermediate, but the solo parts require mature players. Trumpets in Bb or C. First trumpet plays piccolo trumpet for the second half of this piece and often plays above the staff to high Eb. 21st Century. A rousing fanfare for moderately advanced Brass Quintet by Canadian composer/trombonist, Nicholas Francis. This work uses a well known Quebeciose Folk Song. - the publisher This is music for music's sake, a small fanfare full of the joy and pleasure that playing in a brass quintet brings with it. It derives its thematic material from the well-known Quebec folk song V'la l'bon vent, a tune which is sung in a variety of forms in virtually every region of the province. At the time I must have had in mind the magnificent brass fanfares of Montreal composer Jacques Hetu, for the title is certain to put one in mind of his Petite Fanfare pour Lanaudiere. - the composer Features a distinctive pyramid effect using a short rhythmic fragments, frequent use of the major second interval and advanced rhythmic challenges for the ensemble. 20th Century. The title was inspired by the term from Star Trek where warp engines would bend time and space to propel the ship at incredible speeds. Exploring relationships between time and space in a musical sense, this work begins with motives and fragments free-floating in space. These gradually build in energy and motion until coming into phase with one another. After this cadence, a motor section expands and develops the previous free-floating motives over driving, repeated patterns. As the speed increases, these motives fade in and out of phase with each other until the motives come back into phase at "warp speed" in the exciting conclusion. -the publisher Requires contemporary techniques such as valve clicks ("banging" the valves without playing a tone using specific fingerings), aleotoric notation such as feather-beamed groupings (play notes rapidly and gradually ritard), and popping the mouthpiece withhand (using a cupped palm, strike the mouthpiece to produce a popping sound). Straight mutes required for trumpets and horn. Bass trombone is optional substitute for the tuba part. -pc
