Nimrod, from Enigma Variations, op 36 (Hartman) [trumpet in C, flugelhorn]
20th Century. Trumpet 1 in C, trumpet 2 on flugelhorn. Intermediate technically, but requires a mature ensemble. One of Elgar's most beloved works is Variations on an Original Theme known popularly as the Enigma Variations - written for orchestra. The enigma concerns aspects of the theme itself, what its meaning is and also the identity of another, unstated, theme that overshadows the variations yet is never actually played. The 14 variations were conceived as character sketches of friends of Elgar's, including himself and his wife. Nimrod is a nickname for Elgar's publisher, A.J. Jaeger. Jaeger means "hunter" in German and Nimrod is a mighty hunter of the Old Testament. --the publisher

Romantic/Early 20th Century. Russian born Victor Ewald (1860-1935) was not a musician by trade. Rather, he was an engineer who had music as his advocation. An amateur cellist and hornist, he wrote several brass quintets for the conical brasses common in his day. One presumes he took part in their performance as well. This edition of this popular work has been edited by Donald Miller from the original version (2 cornets, altohorn, tenorhorn, and tuba) for the modern brass quintet of 2 Bb trumpets, F horn, trombone, and tuba. Set in three movements (Moderato; Adagio non troppo lento; Allegro moderato) the Quintet is a staple in the literature, requiring strong individual and ensemble performance skills. Golyard's Grounde [Gr.6-advanced]
20th Century (1971). Canadian composer Malcolm Forsythe wrote Golyardes' Grounde for the Canadian Brass. This unique piece begins quite somber and gradually increases in intensity, becoming quite elaborate with intricate rhythmic textures and a variety of symmetrical and asymmetrical meters. Well-detailed dynamic indications help bring out important lines and balance the ensemble. Forsyth was principal trombonist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and currently is professor of composition at the University of Alberta.
