20th Century: Tonal. The Ephemeropterae is part of the Dragonfly insect family and has a very short life span. The two movements in this piece clearly represent the two stages of its life. The first is lilting and full of sixteenth note triplets to personify its fun and fast-moving aquatic state. The quick and carefree adult state is described in the last movement with expressive dynamics and ornamentations. Duration: 2'45" -AP

The work is inspired by the years following World War II in America (1945-1961), when air travel was considered luxurious and glamorous. The work is in two movements - the first features a soaring, lyrical tune that is flutter-tongued; the second begins with an angular cadenza that is followed by a robust high-altitude bossa nova. -the publisher

21st Century (2007). Thomas Dempster writes, "Divided into five short movements, this work makes usage of vertiginous trajectories and the extremes of range of the piccolo: that is, the sheer precipitous movement from extreme middle to extreme-extreme high, and the thin, airy cliffs between. In some dialects of French, the word pont - bridge - is homophonous to the word pentes (or near enough, as the voice of the flute is to that of the piccolo). At least on a literary level, this could reflect b...

20th Century. The little march composed in 1924 forms the nucleus of the suite for wind instruments Mladi, in which the jaunty flute theme weaves through the 3rd movement. Incidentally, the "bluebirds" do not refer to birds but to the light blue robes worn by the choristers at the monastery in Brno, which Janacek entered at the age of eleven. Almost 60 years later during a visit to Potsdam he remembered the Prussian troops' invasion of Brno and, with this in mind, wrote a chamber music miniature ...
