Contains: Trombone part, piano part, and "Performing the Galliard Solo Sonatas" guide.
This unique set is published in the form of two books. The first book is a standard three-line score with a traditionally realized two-hand keyboard part in the lower two staves, and the trombone solo part in the top "solo" staff. This score is intended for use by the keyboardist.
The second book is the solo part. It is unique in that it is also presented in a three-line score. The braced lowed two staves (staves 2 and 3), which look suspiciously like a keyboard part, are actually the bass line with figured bass numbers in the lower (#3 "left hand") staff, and the trombone solo line in the upper (#2 "right hand") staff. The top (#1 "solo") staff is left completely blank for the trombonist to pencil-in their own ornaments or embellishments as desired. The idea is to give the soloist not only their solo line, but also the bass line and harmonies so they can better prepare and interpret the work for performance. The publisher includes a brief discussion on this topic (see the 4th page of the sample displayed below). -cdp
