Clarke, Herbert L. (Brandenburg) Carnival of Venice

Euphonium Solos w/Piano

  • Clarke, Herbert L. (Brandenburg)

Carnival of Venice (Brandenburg) [treble or bass clef]

20th Century. Based on an old traditional Italian song, this work has become the classic technical showpiece for valved brasses. Arranged by Arthur Brandenburg and set in the key of Eb major.

Although based on the classic Italian tune Carnival of Venice, this work presents the theme and variations differntly than the perhaps more well-known trumpet edition done by Erik Leidzen. In this arrangement, the theme is never stated in the clear by the euphonium (it appears in the piano after the euphonium's opening statement). Instead, the theme is first delivered in an ornamented form in an easy Allegretto. After the piano statement, there are three variations, all in 6/8, the final of which, like the trumpet edition, embeds the theme using accents within a running flourish of 32nd notes. Solo part provided for both treble clef and bass clef readers.
