Tcherepnin, Alexander Sonatine Sportive

Alto Sax Solos w/Piano

  • Tcherepnin, Alexander

    Sonatine Sportive

20th century. Russian composer. As its title indicates, this Sonatine attempts to adopt to music the surprise elements of sports. "Boxing" pits the pianist and saxophonist against one another as they take turns attempting to "hit" a desired note (pun intended). The second movement, "Mi-temps", is a larghetto which represents the rest that two players are taking in the midst of a competition. The final movement, a canon titled "Race", begins with the saxophonist in the lead by a minor third and two measures. The pianist catches up to a point where they are only a minor second and single eighth note apart. You can decide who the winner is in this surprise ending! -ap
