Romantic. The Jolly Farmer is a short piano work by Schumann found in a collection he wrote for his three daughters. Since this melody in played predominately in the left hand on the piano, various arrangements have been created featuring low voices in orchestras and bands. William J. Bell, a tuba player, decided to compose a short theme and variations based on this famous melody. The result has become an absolute standard amongst developing tuba players. It features the original melody and ornam...
Romantic period. Transcription of the "12. Knecht Ruprecht" movement from the popular piano collection, Album for the Young. A familiar tune to anyone who has taken piano lessons and progressed to the easier repertoire. Knight Ruprecht is roughly a "supporting actor" to Saint Nicholas in German folklore, who admonishes children on their wrongdoings at Christmas time. Score & parts.
Romantic. The "Kinderszenen" is certainly one of Schumann's best work for piano. Every one of the 13 movements is a masterpiece by itself. His sense of phrasing was one of his greatest gifts as a composer. It pervades all his music but most especially the "Kinderszenen" wich makes them well suited for wind instruments. Each movement depicts a different scene of a child's life. -P.K.

Jazz. Ragtime. James Scott was a lesser known African-American composer of ragtimes in the golden age of that form. This work is a nice addition to the ragtime literature that works so well for quintet.

One of the outstanding young quintets was the Valente Brass: Yurie Yoshida, and Jessica Cruz, Trumpets; Erika Miras, Horn; Jonathan Sie, Trombone; and Jake Kraft, Bass Trombone. They kept urging me to write a quintet for them and thus was born HoopLA. This short (4:30 min) one movement piece was premiered by them at the "Live at Basset Hall 8" concert, April 13, 2014. It was during this same ...
20th Century (1999). In March 1999, Fred Mills, former trumpeter in the Canadian Brass and then Professor at the University of Georgia, invited me to be an artist at the First International Brass Quintet Festival and Competition. My role there was as tubist, composer and adjudicator. It was a wonderful and important event--and I got to play with some of the finest brass players in the world. Polka.com was written for the Artist's Night Concert, March 11, and was premiered by Tim Morrison, Fre...
