Beethoven Serenade in D, op 25 (Voss) [advanced] For flute, violin & viola. What occasioned Beethoven to write a composition for such an unusual and yet sonorous group of instruments? Was it perhaps commissioned by a nobleman who played music with such a group and needed music? Whatever the reason behind it, opus 25 is one of Beethoven's few chamber music works that did not have a bass instrument. Despite the unusual combination of instruments, Beethoven had no difficulty in finding a publisher for his serenade; shortly afterwards he even turned to the work again and revised an arrangement for flute and piano (op. 41), which had been made by a third party. Buss Time Capsule [intermediate] 20th Century (1998). For clarinet & violin. An entertaining sonatina in four movements: Daybreak, Chorale, Rendezvous, and Homeward Bound and is both fun to play and listen to. The first movement has a frolicking and optimistic character. Chorale breaks with the traditional structure of the chorale in that each phrase gets a measure longer. The harmonies of the second movement contain some spicy dissonances as well. Rendezvous, is in a lilting 6/8 and really "works up a lather" as it progresses to an exciting climax. The final movement, Homeward Bound, begins with a fanfare-like passage that gives way to a spirited dance characterized by an intriguing interplay between the two instruments.

Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A, K.581 & Fragment KA.91 (Wiese) Mozart referred to the piece as "Stadler's Quintet" in a letter of April 8, 1790, to his benefactor, Johann Michael Puchberg. From this we can infer that the term"Stadler Quintet" for K. 581 evidently came from Mozart himself. Stadler was one of the city's outstanding clarinetists. His name is also associated with the invention of the basset clarinet. Ever since Mozart encountered the clarinet in Mannheim in 1778 he loved the instrument's warm and expressive tone. His friendship with Anton Stadler, the clarinetist in the Royal-Imperial Court Orchestra in Vienna, prompted him to compose not only the Clarinet Concerto (K. 622) but also this "Quintet of Quintets", which was written two years before his death. Like almost all his works for the clarinet, this Quintet was probably intended originally for the basset clarinet. However, it survives only in two posthumous prints, both of which call for a standard clarinet. These prints form the basis of our edition. As an added bonus, the appendix contains a fragmentary Allegro in Bb major for the same combination of instruments. For clarinet & string quartet (2 violins, viola, cello). Parts only. With his trios which he consciously kept in a classical manner, Reger hoped to prove the contrary to the "ignorant people," who for their part accused him of "a lack of feeling" and being too "complicated." The instrumentation for his serenades opus 77a and 141a is rather distinctive: he omits the lower registers, opting for the bright tones of the flute, violin and viola to outline joyful musical figures and catchy melodies. Reger's own style cannot however be mistaken. These two serenades, which are technically not overly demanding, are not only suited for concert performances but also offer a welcome change for those engaging in spontaneous chamber music.
